I was in electronics school in 1981 through 1983 and we glossed over tubes. Solid state was clearly the way to the future. Went to work for Western Electric in 1983 and only dealt with microprocessors and solid state. Job went to Taiwan after the Bell System breakup.
I worked for Altec in OKC before I realized I needed an education. The 9440A solid state amp was the king at the time I was there in 1980. I bought 2 on the employee discount. I wish I still had them now. :( 900 Watts (bridged) and the blue lights were quite impressive. Very cool at the time. They thumped! ;)
